This Award winning vitamin C serum from Mad Hippie is a harmonious blend of antioxidants that work wonders for ageing and sun-damaged skin. Reduces wrinkles and hyperpigmentation and combats photo-aging. The form of vitamin C used in this serum is sodium ascorbyl phosphate (STAY-C® 50). Mad Hippie Vitamin C
Mad Hippie uses a different form of vitamin C than other companies. The most commonly used is ascorbic acid, which is highly acidic and cannot easily pass through the skin's lipid barrier. For this, you need a concentration of about 15-20% to be effective. It can also cause acne breakouts, as the ascorbic acid sits on top of the skin and causes irritation.
Mad Hippie uses sodium ascorbyl phosphate instead, which is ascorbic acid with a salt molecule. This makes it easy to pass through the skin's lipid barrier, making it much more bioavailable. It also adds to its stability, making it less prone to oxidation (a major concern for ascorbic acid). Our serum will also fight acne breakouts!
Mad Hippie does not give out exact percentages of most ingredients because we don't want our customers to focus on just one ingredient when it's really about the gestalt of the formulation, with all the different actives working together. For example, the addition of ferulic acid + vitamin E was recently shown in a Duke study to double the photo-protection of vitamin C topically.
You also cannot easily compare different forms of vitamins by percentage, as some forms are significantly more bioavailable than others. Our vitamin C serum is very potent, yet gentle. It would compare in effectiveness to a product with 20% ascorbic acid. The manufacturer of Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate recommends a 3-5% range. We are considerably higher than this.
It is great for improving skin appearance, reducing hyperpigmentation and fighting acne. It is called "A Miracle Worker" by Allure, "Glow-Getter Serum" by InStyle and received many awards. We welcome people to try this product compared to other vitamin C serums and decide for themselves.
The Mad Hippie Vitamin C serum is the big favourite of Victoria's Secret model Bridget Malcolm.
Frequently asked questions
What is the percentage of vitamin C? Our Vitamin C serum uses sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), a form of vitamin C that is much more stable and less prone to oxidation than some traditionally used forms of vitamin C. This serum is great for both sensitive and acne-prone skin! The recommended percentage for efficacy without irritation is different for different forms of vitamin C and therefore they cannot be easily compared on a percentage basis. Our serum would be comparable to a serum of 15-20% L-ascorbic acid. We use a combination of vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid because this trio of ingredients has been shown to provide a strengthening antioxidant effect.
Should the serum be transparent? A pale yellow, cloudy serum is not out of the normal range of our vitamin C serum because of the plant extracts (such as chamomile, clary sage and konjac) used in the formulations.
Should I use sunscreen if the vitamin C serum is applied in the morning? Our vitamin C serum is rich in antioxidants, making it an excellent choice for daytime use, but it does not replace sunscreen. We recommend wearing a mineral sunscreen daily to protect your skin from damage.
What is the consistency like? Vitamin C serum is a thin, gel-like serum that is quickly and easily absorbed by the skin.
Is it good for acne-prone skin? Our Vitamin C serum is great for easily congested and oily skin types. It is a concentrated blend of vitamin C, ferulic acid and vitamin E, along with nutrient-rich konjac root.
Should I apply this morning, tonight or both? We recommend using our vitamin C serum in the morning and exfoliants such as our vitamin A serum or exfoliating serum at night. If you don't use another serum at night, you can apply the Vitamin C serum twice a day.
How much should I use? We recommend using a small amount of vitamin C serum, which is usually enough to cover face and neck.
Does this have a fragrance? We do not use synthetic fragrances in our line, but this serum does contain konjac root, chamomile and sage extracts that give a faint aroma. It does not have a strong scent and disappears quickly.
