NATURAL MOSQUITO FREE NIGHTS
The warm weather is coming. Although we are eagerly looking forward to it, it also brings a less pleasant side, namely….. the mosquito.
The mosquito is considered one of the most irritating insects in the world. The nightly buzzing and itching cause many sleepless moments.
Did you know that…
- …there are approximately 3,500 species of mosquitoes worldwide?
- …a mosquito gorges itself for several days at a time?
- …a mosquito 'bites' and not 'stings'?
- …only female mosquitoes bite because of the proteins needed for the development of the eggs?
- …body odor (especially sweat) attracts mosquitoes?
- …the mosquito is responsible for more deaths worldwide than any other living creature?
What can we do about this uninvited, unpleasant guest?
There are all sorts of products on the market that you can smear yourself with to keep mosquitoes at bay. The active ingredient in these products is DEET (diethyl-meta-toluenamide). DEET is a chemical compound that has a strong repellent effect on mosquitoes.
During World War II it was developed for the US Army. Later it was also released for general use.
Following the correct application of this product is very important.
Research has shown that DEET can have neurotoxic effects. That is, toxic to the nervous system. Common reported side effects include: skin irritation and a numb burning sensation. This in case of 'overdose' and incorrect use.
The effect of this product is limited. Depending on the concentration, the duration of action will be shorter or longer. However, always too short to be protected for a whole night.
According to our philosophy and therefore as far as we are concerned, this is not an option for use.
Of course we choose nature!
Nature has a variety of plants and herbs that offer an excellent alternative without unpleasant side effects and health risks.
By planting the right flora in your garden or on your balcony you build your own 'anti-mosquito bunker' in a natural way. Mosquitoes hate the smell of the following plants:
- marigold
- eucalyptus
- rosemary
- catnip
- stork's bill
- deer mint
- lemongrass
The best place to plant these plants and herbs is as close as possible to the places that provide mosquitoes with access to your home (bedroom window, (garden) door).
Moreover, you can also use the herbs in your kitchen to make the most delicious dishes. A win-win situation.
Do you have a walnut tree in your garden? Mosquitoes hate the smell of the leaves. Put some fresh, crushed leaves on your bedside table and the mosquitoes will fly around your sleeping area in a wide arc.
The following essential oils are known to have mosquito repellent properties:
- lemon balm
- peppermint
- lavender
- basil
- cedar
As far as we are concerned, there is enough supply from 'mother nature' for peaceful, healthy and mosquito-free nights.
Bring on summer!!
