What is clear zinc oxide?
clear zinc oxide is a specialised type of mineral zinc oxide powder whose particles have a porous surface texture (like a sea sponge) that does not reflect as much visible light as standard non-nano zinc oxide and therefore becomes less white on the skin. The large particle size of clear zinc oxide gives it the same excellent safety and efficacy as standard non-nano-zinc oxide. It does not soak into your body, is not harmful to the environment and provides excellent UVA and UVB protection.
Is clear zinc oxide safe?
Clear zinc oxide is an approved UV filter for sunscreen in the US, EU and all major international markets and meets the Natural Products Association (US) and ECOCERT (EU) standards for natural cosmetics. After ten years of reviewing all the published research and conducting our own independent laboratory analyses on clear zinc oxide, we have determined that it meets our strict standards for ingredient safety and efficacy and is perfectly safe for us to use in our sunscreens and on our families . From 2022, we will now use clear zinc oxide as the sole active ingredient in all our sunscreen products.
Is clear zinc oxide nano or non-nano?
The top image (2nd image) shows that clear zinc oxide is composed of large particles between about 500 and 9000 nanometres in diameter (5 - 90x larger than nanoparticles). The bottom image shows a close-up of the zinc oxide crystallites that form the larger particles. You can see that there are no free nanoparticles (which we verified with light scattering analysis). Despite this, and the general acceptance in the US that clear zinc is non-nano, we decided not to identify our zinc oxide as non-nano because of the different definitions of nano in some other countries where we sell our sunscreens. For example, the EU considers clear zinc oxide a nanomaterial because some of its identifiable constituent particles (the small crystallites that form the larger non-nano particles) are measurable at the nanoscale. But to remind you, there are no detectable free nanoparticles in clear zinc oxide.
Usage:
Knead the tube before each use. For full protection, apply generously (2 mg/cm2 skin) to all exposed skin 15 minutes before sun exposure, then rub in to reduce the whitening effect. Children under 6 months: ask a doctor.
Reapply baby sunscreen: after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating. Immediately after towel drying. At least every 2 hours.

Sealing 90% of products are not sealed by brands. For many brands, sustainability is a priority and for that reason they do not want to add unnecessary waste to their packaging. They therefore choose not to seal their products.
